Zippers can be classified into 2 basic types, open-end zipper and closed-end zipper.

The easiest way to distinguish an open-end zipper from a closed-end zipper is to look at the bottom stop.

If the zipper can be opened completely into two parts so that one side can be separated from the other, it is an open-ended zipper (Separe). This usually follows the locating pin and box mechanism. In some cases the locating pin is inserted to the right and the box is inserted to the left, while in other cases the locating pin is inserted to the left and the box is inserted to the right. In both cases, when the zipper is fully opened, it will separate into 2 parts.

If the zipper cannot be fully opened at the end and the zipper halves do not separate completely when the zipper is opened, it is a closed-end zipper.

Similarly, depending on the materials of manufacture, closed-end zippers can be classified as:

Depending on their function, both open-end zippers and closed-end zippers can be divided into the following categories, which apply to metal zippers, plastic zippers and coil zippers.

  • One-way open-end zippers
  • Two-way open-end zippers - 2-way separation zippers/double separation zippers: including two sliders. Zipper halves can be completely separated from each other, just like one-way open-ended zippers. This type of zipper is often seen on long coats, long dresses, overcoats or thick winter coats.
  • One-way close-end zippers
  • Two-way closed-end zippers: including an O-shape with two bottom stops and an X-shape with two top stops. Both subcategories contain 2 sliders. This type of zipper is often seen in the luggage industry.
